A series of computer-calculated 3D still lifes, based on free composition of surfaces, volumes and found 3D-model objects.

After an introduction to the 3D modelling and rendering program Cinema 4D, the students were asked to develop a stringent series of images, ranging from abstract planar visual compositions to representational three-dimensional ones. Conception, development and image generation were all to take place exclusively within the 3D graphics software. Thus, the potential that such a 3D environment offers in terms of possibilities for design and expression was explored by way of example. Step by step, the students were subsequently introduced to the software and its configuration options. Via exercises that progressively built on one another, the course participants used computers to develop various still lifes. These were based on free composition of colour, surface and basic body in the first phase, and on free arrangement of found 3D models from online libraries in the second phase. In addition to teaching key basics of visual composition, the aim was to explore the potential that digital 3D processing methods offer for the conception and design of images.
