Description

A series of built model scenes and their photographic reproduction, based on the visual and stylistic characteristics of selected film stills.

In the first part of the course, the students examined the visual aesthetics of selected film stills. The aim was to note the stylistic attributes and visual composition elements, and to subsequently transfer the gained insights to a series of newly imagined scenes by means of model making and photography. On the basis of the film stills’ typical visual characteristics, the participants were asked to build a number of physical models and to produce convincing images of these with a still camera. For the visual implementation, the decisive factors were not only the choice of scale, materials and decor for the models, but also the realisation of consistent lighting design, camera-related criteria (such as the camera’s position and angle, the aspect ratio and the framing) and the translation and incorporation of attributes of the chosen film stills’ visual composition. The intention was to show that expressive images can be created via model making and photography, and that this approach to generating visual haptics and atmosphere is still a valuable alternative to purely computer-generated 3D images.
