Dissected Nature. 2022
Nature itself and the image of it that we make for ourselves are subject to constant change. It is hardly pristine and wild any longer – more than ever, it is shaped by processes of civilisation. Schaerer’s works shown in the Kunstmuseum Olten focus on nature as a construct of human imagination and design, but also as an object of aesthetic and analytical observation.
In the solo show "Dissected Nature", several series of pictures were on display, some created specifically for this exhibition. In the representations of landscape fragments and natural objects, which appear abstract in different ways, there are signs of the use of new technical image processing. Alongside views of gardens and plants, projected from multiple perspectives and broken down into fragments reminiscent of kaleidoscopic formations, there are works developed from lines. These are based on the indicated natural objects’ organic vocabulary of forms, and oscillate between plane and relief. In addition, there are works designed from scratch on a computer. These pseudo-photographic natural artefacts form a sculptural reality of their own, freed from physical constraints and springing entirely from the imagination.
Incorporation of digital technologies and examination of their aesthetic strategies are central to Schaerer’s work. He addresses analogue visual traditions and explores the shifts that occur when new cultural and production techniques meet established themes and patterns of representation. The resulting cosmos, enriched with diverse references, makes it clear that a distinct line can no longer be drawn between the worlds of digital images and material objects.
