Offset Series. 2022
The pictorial work called ‘Offsets’ is a series of computer drawings that negotiate between plane and relief in different and abstract ways, and are based on the naturally grown environment’s vocabulary of forms. The work was conceived for the solo show "Dissected Nature" in the Kunstmuseum Olten and was shown in the main hall between September and November 2022.
The starting point for the images was a selection of photographic views of plants and vegetation whose contours and outlines were subsequently vectorised and prepared as a basis for further image development. In some cases, single linear strands were multiplied several times, interlaced, slightly offset and underlaid with drop shadows, lending the individual images a wafer-thin layer of pictorial depth. In other cases, very specific line segments were given a different brightness and colouring to achieve a relief-like visual effect. Some of the images can certainly be classified as graphic art. Others though, with their subtly implied three-dimensionality, bridge the gap to seemingly photographic depiction. The aim was to experiment with abstract modes of display, to explore the points of contact between plane and depth, and to develop a variety of images that oscillate between abstract and photorealistic drawing.
